Will an antihistamine help for poison sumac?

Poison sumac causes a rash that is basically an allergic reaction therefore you may get some relief by using an antihistamine. Over-the-counter Benadryl is quite effective for relieving the associated itching. If your reaction worsens you need to see a doctor as another medication can be prescribed.

An anthistamine won't make the poison sumac go away. It should help with the itching and swelling, especially if taken regularly. My mom had a doctor prescribe a prescription strength medication once when the over the counter was not enough.

Yes, an antihistamine will help, but it will not cure poison sumac. The antihistamine will only make it less itchy which will reduce your need to scratch and spread the rash. The rash should clear up on its own eventually.

While an antihistamine will probably help, it might be better to apply some remedy directly to the rash rather than taking a pill that will make you sleepy. But then the antihistamine might be good right before bed.

Unless the exposure is treated with soap and water immediately, or within ten minutes, an antihistamine, like Benadryl, might help the itch a little but probably won't help clear the rash, which usually disappears on its own within two to three weeks.
