Why would you become penpals with someone in prison?

I think it is because some people think that everyone deserves kindness. Inmates do not often get visitors, and some of them will be in prison for many, many years, all alone. The penpals just want to give someone a friend.

There are lots of reasons people might write to someone who is incarcerated; they might be relatives of the person, or relatives of victims looking for answers. They may be sympathetic, either to the persons situation or want to help with their legal situation. A lot of people are also just curious.
