What does it mean when a prison is on lock down?

I heard about a prison going on "lock down" over a prison riot, but what does it really mean?

When there is a reason to control violence prisons go on lock down and all prisoners are kept in their cells. No one is allowed out for any reason. No visitors are allowed.

It usually means that the prison is on high alert due to a problem at the prison such as a prison riot, a guard attack, a problem with inmates fighting, medical problems, a dangerous situation either inside of the prison or outside of the prison. Basically anything that could cause harm to others.
