Usually the prison will go on lock down - every inmate must return to his or her cell and then the prison grounds will be searched by the guards. If the missing inmate still cannot be found, then local and state authorities will be notified.

Misplaced? Many prisons will go into "lock-down" if they cannot find a prisoner; the rest of the prisoners are locked in their cells while guards perform a thorough search.

Prisoners do not roam free. They are closely supervised in confined areas. They do not have privileges that would enable them to be "misplaced."

Prisoners are closely watched. The point of incarceration is: no freedom. Inmates are not given the freedom to roam unsupervised in vast areas with lots of hiding places. If a prisoner were to be "misplaced," it is likely that search dogs would be called into to assist in locating the individual.
