It's a hostile place where you can't trust anyone. You typically need to find a group to align with, it can be a gang, by race or religion. People use groups for protection. You can't report anything wrong because you will be labeled a snitch. There is a fine line between standing your ground and taking too much crap.

Prsion life is the same old thing day in and day out. Nothing every changes, you have your rules you must follow, you eat at the same time everyday, go to bed at the same time, its not a life at all. The guards have all the control and they treat you like a nobody.

You come in contact with dangerous people. Life is routine, thus boring. Food is bland. Visits are limited to certain days and hours. Your belongings and cell are subject to searches. And your body is subject to searches. Outdoor recreation is limited to perhaps an hour a day. You have no privacy during showering or going to the bathroom.

In general prison life is boring. Many inmates spend the majority of their time in their cell with a roommate. Some live in solitary and are in their cells for 23 hours a day. Inmates are required to do things at certain times and have little to no control over most decisions made regarding their experience.
