Why would someone need an abdominal cerclage?

The OB/GYN is telling my sister she has to have this procedure.

In most cases, an abdominal cerclage is used when a woman's cervix is too short to hold a vaginal cerclage or when past cerclages have failed.

Well an abdominal cerclage is a procedure done on a womans cervix, a treatment for what is called cervical insufficiency. With cervical insufficiency a womans cervix is open more than it should be and there is a high risk for a miscarriage. When a doctor does perform a cerclage they place a stitch on the cervix.

A friend of mine had to have a cerclage because she was dilating too soon. The cerclage is meant to prevent the baby from being born too prematurely. The stitch is removed when the baby reaches an appropriate number of weeks of gestation. However, with my friend, even the cerclage was not successful in preventing premature labor.

When the cervix doesn't close, a cervical cerclage is done to prevent miscarriage. That type has a better rate of success and is usually done when vaginal cerclage is impossible.

This is usually done to prevent miscarriage in women with an incomplete cervix. Once in place it will require her to have a c-section when she comes to term.

She may need a cervical cerclage if she has had premature babies before and/or her cervix does not stay closed during the pregnancy.

You may need to get an abdominal cerclage if you are considered a high risk pregnancy, or if there is any concern about whether you should deliver naturally.
