A cerclage is used to help a condition called incompetent cervix. Sometimes, a woman's cervix will not remain closed throughout the pregnancy resulting in premature labor. A cerclage basically involves temporarily sowing the cervix shut to keep it from opening. This procedure is most successful at the beginning of pregnancy.

A cerclage is basically a strong stitch, or suture that is placed in the cervix during a high risk pregnancy by your doctor in order to try to prevent the cervix from dilating before the body is truly ready to go into labor. I believe a cerclage placement is when they sew your cervix together so it will stay in one place when the baby starts growing. It will keep you from going into an early labor and keep the baby in place in your uterus. This will also keep the uterus from opening.

Sometimes a woman has a risk of an "incompetent cervix. " In other words, your cervix is prone to opening earlier than it should for giving birth to a baby. This is recommend for women who have had second trimester miscarriages. A doctor will stitch up your cervix in the office to prevent it from opening or funelling early.
