Why would a 9-month-old baby test positive for Hep C?

I think it must be some mistake.

There are instances of false positive testing for Hepatitis C and other diseases. You should definitely have the infant re-tested before beginning treatment, preferably at another clinic if possible. Infants have developing livers, which make them prone to Jaundice and other ailments, which can sway Hepatitis tests at times. You should wait a few weeks before retesting.

There could be several reasons. First, mother to child transmission during labor. If you have been exposed to Hepatitis C then your baby could too. Second, has your baby received a blood transfusion? If neither are true, then the test is not necessary but ask your doctor why it's necessary.

Unless the mother has Hep C, it could be a false positive. If you are worried about this contact your pediatrian for another test to confirm.

Hepatitis C can be passed from mother to child during childbirth. This is called vertical transmission. It is, however, very rare. Try getting the baby retested.

It could be that the child still has some of the mother antibodies in its blood stream. My son tested postive for allergies when he was 6 months old and it was because he still had some of my antibodies in his own body. The child may grow out of this when he or she gets older and test negative.
