It could be almost anything, from a loose gas cap, to a serious engine failure. Take it to an Autozone and let them run a diagnostic check (it's free). You could also buy your own code reader and check the error codes yourself. These are handy to have around.

Your check engine light can be on for a number of reasons. Your best bet is too take it to Autozone and have them check it.
