Check engine light is caused by alot of things. Like a piston ring wore out causing low air compression. A piston ring costs about $3 at most. It could also be more expensive things head gasket wore out.

It could simply be a message that some part is due for replacement, set off by passing a mileage mark. It could be a leak in the system, as simple as a loose gas cap. A good repair shop can analyze the computer code for you.

This could mean a warning that a part might be on the verge of going out and needs to be replaced. Get computer code to see whats the problem.
