Why is it called a pair of pants when it is only one pair?

I believe it's called a "pair" of pants because there are two legs in the pants. Just like one pant leg wouldn't be called a pair of pant legs.

A pair of pants refers to the two legs that you're fitting. When people would have trousers fitted, the tailors would charge by the hem or "pair".

I'm not certain but my best guess as to of why they call it a pair would be because you put a pair of legs into them. So because you have 2 legs that each need a pant of their own you have panta and two pants make a pair of pants.

Because it has 2 pant legs. Pair means two and your pants would be two legs. You never heard of a pair of skirts.

Pants are called a pair of pants because each leg is a pant leg, so together it is pair of pants. Pair means two, so since there are two pant legs, it make for a pair of pants.
