Your dog could have kennel cough, also called bordetella. It is highly contagious and dogs get it from coming in contact with dogs carrying it. It is fairly easy to treat, you will need to go to your vet for antibiotics, and you will probably need to treat all other dogs in your household as well.

It could be anything from just being sick, allergies, having swallowed an irritant or hook worms in the dogs throat.

If your dog has be boarded recently or has been in contact with other dogs, he may have bordetella, commonly known as kennel cough. It can be transfered from dog to dog very easily. Your vet can prescribe medication.

Coughing can be a sign of a few diseases in dogs. Your dog could have a respiratory disease such as kennel cough. Coughing can also be a sign of heart disease or heartworm infection. Collapsing trachea can also cause coughing.

If your dog has spent time in a daycare or with lots of other dogs, he may have kennel cough. This can be very dangerous and your dog needs to be seen right away. If that is not the case, he may have a bronchial infection which antibiotics could be prescribed for.

That happens to my dog once and it was because the neighbours next door fumigate their house against mosquitos, and even after the smoke goes, my dog was still coughing.
