It might be something stuck which could be an emergency. It might be something contagious. Dogs suffer from a number of problems that present with coughing. I'd ask about heartworms as well. It'd be a good idea to check with your vet who can actually examine the dog. It'd be good for your peace of mind too.

Your dog may not have just a cough, it may be Kennel Cough, especially if it hasn't been vaccinated, which is very serious and it needs to be treated by a vet right away. We had a dog with a cough and it turned out he had a cold, they put him on antibiotics and it went away.
