Why does my ac unit drip water onto the pipe underneath it?

Answer by  Binome (1975)

It's condensation. The cold pipes inside the unit collect moisture in the air. When enough moisture collects, it drops off of the pipes inside the air conditioner. All air conditioners do this, even the one in your car. It's an unavoidable consequence of something cold being in warm, humid air. Just like bringing a cold beer can outside.

AC units can drip water for a multitude of reasons. Improper Insulation of the line set going from the inside unit to the outside unit. The unit's drain pan can have a hole in it that leaks. It can have a clogged condensate drain which causes the water to overflow the pan and run out!

If your home is fitted with a central air conditioning system, then you are most likely to have a drain line on the outside, which does tend to drip water near the air conditioner. This line is simply draining condensation from the inside air handler to the outside. This is normal.

There is a product called Catch A Drip that captures all of that wasted water and distributes it around your surrounding landscape.  add a comment
