The contactor is a $15 item. The compressor up to $500. The refrigerant must be removed and recovered, then the system recharged. It will take a technician a good 4-6 hours to remove and reinstall a compressor. Then the technician will have to pressure test and evacuate according to EPA law. This can lead to a $1500 - $2000 repair.

In general electrical and AC unit repair is considered "high skill" labor and as such it tends to be more expensive than most repair tasks. A quote up wards of 1000 to 2000 dollars is not unheard of, if the price seems to rich for you, you might want to consult a friend for help.

According to a HVAC service man it may cost 500 to 700 dollars depending on the type of the compressor. You also have to think about the service charge. Some times it may be better to replace the whole system.

You are probably going to spend around eight to nine hundred dollars depending on the compressor. It could be more or less and also depending on the company you are going through they could be overcharging you just because they want you one time but they don't need you for a lifetime.

If you are needing to replace this bad compressor then it should cost about one hundred dollars. If you would buy it used then it would cost you about fifty.
