Cat Scans are generally performed when there is head or spine injuries that occur in bad accidents. They can see things that a normal x-ray cannot see.

They're extremely useful and sometimes necessary to diagnose internal issues like tumors, or where a significant injury has occurred (such as an incredibly severe fracture). I had one to diagnose my deviated septum, so that I could be treated for sinusitis.
