Why do some dogs have a flat face?

It all has to do with breeding. Many dogs are bred to have this feature. Breeders who particularly like the way flat faces look will search for a male dog with the flattest face and breed it with a female who also has a flat face. Result: more flat faced puppies!

Repeated injuries resulting in a flat face would not cause a genetic trait in succeeding generations, since this would be a condition taking place after birth.
