Skunks smell bad because they have a scent glad in their bodies which they use for self defense against animals that might threaten them or kill them for food. Commonly dogs are sprayed by skunks. Skunks being part of the weasel like ferrets have strong scent glands.

Skunks smell bad only when they become startled, attacked or scared. This is their defense against predators, as being sprayed by a skunks results in a lingering odor and your eyes tearing up due to the overwhelming smell. The scent glands are located towards the rear of a skunk and have been removed in some cases of domestic skunks.
