Why do cats sleep so much?

Cats are naturally nocturnal animals so it's normal for them to sleep a lot during the day and then be awake at night.

Studies have shown that predators need more sleep than prey animals. For instance, male lions sleep around 20 hours a day, whereas giraffes sleep only 2 hours a day.

Cats have two different types of sleep that they go through everyday. One that is much like a nap, that consists of a light, easy to wake from type of sleep and the other more like REM in humans. The reason for this is cats in nature need high bursts of energy to hunt.
