Why are my guinea pigs shedding?

Normally there are two types of shedding. If the guinea pigs shedding is very light like cats or dogs then it is absolutely normal and it changes with the season. But if it is clumps, then it would be skin problem because of lice or mice. check for redness and rashes very closely.

If your guinea pig is only shedding a little bit then that's fine. Almost all animals that have fur shed there spring and winter coats. Although if your guinea pig is shedding in clumps and its hair is thinning then its possible that they have mites or skin infection.

A certain amount of shedding is normal, especially in longer-haired peruvian guinea pigs. If you have noticed an increased amount of shedding, it could be that there is insufficient Vitamin C in the pigs' diet, or it might be mange mites/a fungal infection. Then you should take your pig to a specialized exotics vet for a checkup.

Some shedding is normal. If it is excessive or you start noticing bald spots, take your pigs to a qualified exotics vet (who is experienced with rodents) for a checkup ASAP. It could be mange mites, fungus or a vitamin C deficiency, all of which are easily identifiable and treatable.
