I have been afraid of clowns since I was a child, and reading the book IT by Stephen King did not help matters.

Most fears like this come from an early experience, even one you do not consciously remember. Ask your parents about early experiences with clowns.

This is a very common fear known as Coulrophobia. It's root is usually a bad experience as a child, but can be related to obscuring one's facial expressions with paint.

A lot of people are scared of them because of the makeup that they wear, it has a creepy sort of effect and strikes many as inhuman. Also the silent, tricky gestures and tricks they do can just somehow rub people the wrong way. It could also remind you of painful childhood memories due to various clown-related parties or toys.

Lots of people are afraid of clowns. While they are designed to be silly and funny, their costumes and makeup can be overwhelming, and books like It do not help matters. In general, the eccentric nature of clowns makes them more frightening than funny to many people.
