Louisiana dentist, Lascaux, invented cotton candy at his dentist office but he did not patent it. William Marrison and John Wharton where given a patent for the cotton candy maker in 1899.

Unfortunately the answer is not simple. William Morrison and John Wharton invented an electric cotton candy machine, then called 'fairy floss', in 1897 getting a patent in 1899. But other resources say that Thomas Patton was the first to invented it and got a patent for it in 1900.

The first electric cotton candy machine was invented by 2 Candy makers from Tenessee. Their names were William Morrison and John C. Wharton. This happened in 1897. It was served in wooden boxes for 25 cents.

In 1900 William Patton got a patent for a gas-fired machine. A Lousiana dentist named Joseph Lascaux patented a third machine in 1921 and invented the name "cotton candy. "
