The worst of the worst fade into obscurity eventually. Currently, Kevin Costner (did well as an actor and was allowed to direct), Elaine May (no clue why) and Michael Cimino (did well as a writer and was allowed to direct) are at the top of the list.

Both Ed Wood and Uwe Boll are usually considered to be two of the worst film directors of all time.

In my opinion the worst director, regardless of his films achieving cult status, would be Troy Duffy. He seems nearly impossible to work with.
