What does a director do?

My son says he wants to be one but I am not sure what a director does.

A director is everything from babysitter to god. The director interprets the author's words according to their own vision, and moves heaven and earth to "direct" the actors to show that vision. They also interact with the producer who provides the money, to make the show viable, instruct the costume and set designers to make the vision visible.
