The first well known violin maker was Jacob Steiner, born in 1961. A few others were Matthias Klotz and Leopold Wilhem. A good source of information is the Federation of German Violin and Bow Makers.

There are several legends in German violin-making history. Jacob Stainer, born in 1621 and deceased in 1683, is oft considered the greatest of all. Two members of the Klotz family in Mittenwald are considered to be legends as well. They are Matthias Klotz (1656-1743) and Sebastian Klotz (1696-1768).
