How do you tune a violin?

I am trying to teach myself how to play off an old violin that was given to me.

Since the violin is a string instrument - the best way to tune it is to find ways to adjust the tension of the strings. There are a set of knobs at the top that will tighten or loosen the string. Turn the knob and pluck the string until tuned.

A violin is tuned in fifths. Usually you start to tune the A string compared with a piano or tuning fork. Also available in music shops is a very handy kazoo-like flute with the four notes you have to tune (G-D-A-E). Carefully turn the knobs.

If you know how to tune a perfect fifth, find an A 440 source and tune the A string. Then tune the D with the A and the E with the A. They are a fifth apart. Finally tune the G with the D. Otherwise get an electronic tuner.

A violin is tuned G D A E. The strings have to be tightened or loosened with the pegs which are located on the scroll of the instrument, or for minor changes the tiny screws at the tail. Play strings to see if it is in tune.
