It became famous at dance parties and often dj's play it at weddings or family parties because it is easy to dance and people can learn it quickly. The electric slide is a line dance which anyone recognizes, often danced at disco's or school dances and birthdays or even festivals.

The dance's popularity is due to it being a line dance you can participate in without having a partner. A man named Ric Silver claimed to be the originator.
