What's a good number of college applications to fill out?

Make a list of a couple schools you'd like to go to, and apply to all those. Then you'd want to apply to some average schools, perhaps a couple of state schools up to a few hours away. Lastly, have a few safety schools you'd be confident in getting accepted.

In order to focus upon the colleges you are most interested, and because many have application fees, 5 to 7 would be ideal.

This is dependent on the individual. If you don't have nay idea where you want to go, I would fill about 8 applications for places you'd be happy going. If you know specifically what you want, fill out one for early decision and see if you get in.
