No business needs to accept personal checks. A policy against them usually arises from a history of being burned from bad cheques.

Plenty of restaurants, small businesses, and local shops tend to not accept personal checks or travelers checks of any kind. Most Beauty salons and nail parlors also do not accept personal checks. Doctors offices also do not tend too accept personal checks upon visit, but usually accept them as payments with bills.

Many small businesses do not accept checks because they cannot afford to lose the money if they are not good; it is usually a personal choice. Also, some gas stations.
