There are several websites online that will help you determine the best dog for your needs. Also, some of the best information (not to mention, some of the world's greatest dogs) can come from your local humane society/animal shelter. The staff will help match your situation with a great animal.

You can always use the Internet, or ask your local breeder. Pet stores have books available, and usually their associates will be knowledgeable enough to help you select the perfect breed for your family. For small children, I'll tell you that appearances are misleading. Although smaller dogs seem less dangerous, they are more likely to bite. They have inferiority complexes.

All dogs can become family dogs. If you have small children, a larger breed would be the best. Golden Retreivers, Labs and some herding breeds(Collies) are great with kids.

Having an ideal breed in mind makes things easier; then research the breed on the web. Make sure the breed is large enough to handle rough play from small kids.
