You need to make sure the wood is cleaned and dirt free. Wipe with a cloth and soap solution, when dry start applying an exterior caulk. Best type is a 20-30 year caulk. After applying, clean seams and make sure all seams are filled with caulk.

Choose a good quality latex caulk that is paintable. Any gap over 1/4" will need foam backer rod to prevent the caulk from running into the gaps to far. Go slow and steady and make sure you clan out any old caulk before starting.
