The greatest development was the use of steam power, mostly fueled by coal. This led the economy from manual and animal power to mechanical power.

It was a series of inventions and developments more than a single defining incident. The invention of the steam train and internal combustion engine coupled with advances in factory equipment and employee productivity really gave the Industrial Revolution its impetus.
