The steam engine started the Industrial Revolution, so it was important. Mechanical plows and reaping machines greatly increased the amount of land people could farm and improved nutrition. Factory looms made cloth less expensive and created factory towns. Trains and ships with steam engines revolutionized transportation and built capitalism.

The biggest inventions of The First Industrial Revolution were the mechanical loom (invented in 1785 by Edmund Cartwright) and the steam engine (invented by James Watt in 1769).
