The origin of the fire was a single building fire within a baker's shop. The reason that it spread so fast into the infamous "great fire of London" was that buildings in the city were very close together and made mostly of wood and so it spread very fast.

The Great Fire of London started on 2 September 1666, in Thomas Faynor's bakery on Pudding Lane. Due to their wood buildings and archaic building techniques, it spread quickly, helped by a strong eastern wind. It destroyed most of the city, gutting the medieval city within the walls of London.
