The fire started at the bakery of Thomas Farriner on Pudding Lane. Fires were common in medieval cities, which were comprised of narrow, winding streets and buildings made of easily combustible materials. Moreover, fire brigades and effective fire prevention were unheard of at the time. These factors combined with dry, windy conditions helped this fire become particularly destructive.

The Great Fire of London of 1666 started in the early morning hours of Sept. 2 on Pudding Lane. A small fire started in the bakeshop owned by Thomas Farynor, baker to King Charles II. The fire spread to a hay pile and eventually through much of the city.

Mrs. O'Leary's cow was a myth that an Irish woman's cow kicked over a lantern and started the Great Chicago fire. The great fire of London took place in 1666. The city burned for three days after initially starting in a bakery in the medieval part of London, inside the old city walls.
