Rose Pruning Basics Begin pruning from the base of the plant. Open the plant to light and air circulation. Cut clean at a 45-degree angle, about 1/4 inches above a bud. Remove all broken, dead, diseased wood. Remove any weak or twiggy branches. Remove sucker growth, remaining foliage.
