It is best to prune locust trees during late winter while they are still dormant. If it must be done, then they can be pruned during summer, as long as the weather is not rainy or humid.

Locust trees should ideally be pruned in the cooler months. Fall is ideal as it gives the tree time to recover before the coldest weather.

The best time to prune a locust tree, or any tree for that matter, is at the time of planting.

Leave most functional limbs on newly planted trees. Pruning should start in the second year or third year of the tree's life. Prune forked trunks. forked trunks reduce multiple problems.
