Start by pinching back growing tips when the plant is small to encourage branching. Thereafter the lavender bush should be trimmed back by half its height annually.

I raised lavender in zone 8, and it tended to get leggy and start to brown off once the summer got really hot (mid-July). I got in the habit of cutting it back to 3-4 inches then, and it would come back for a second lighter bloom in September-October. Interplant it with Daylilies; their foliage will camouflage the trimmed stems.

Never prune all the foliage off of a Lavender plant, this could kill it. Always ensure there is vegetation left when pruning is complete.

People can do that in spring or autumn and spring pruning is better, but you should not touch the sensitive part during your work, otherwise it will die.

Lavender adds beauty to any garden. Pruning begins early for these plants by pinching the new growth and cutting off the first seasons flower buds. This will produce a healthier, larger plant in the next growing season.
