What should I do about a slipping transmission and smoke coming from the exhaust pipe of my Mitsubishi Diamante?

First address the transmission, you will most likely need a new one. Now move to the smoke, if the smoke is black then its oil, if its white then it could be antifreeze. In all honesty it might be more affordable to go a different route.

If the transmission is already slipping, it's going to have to be replaced, period. the average cost of a transmission rebuild is $1,200+ or more for a refurb or OEM replacement. Smoking is most likely an oil leak.

If the transmission is slipping you should have a shop look at it. It probably need to be rebuilt though. The smoke indicates something leaking into the cylinder. White smoke is usually coolant and blue smoke is typically oil. This means it could be a cracked head/block or leaking ring/seal. A good should be able to determine the issue.

These could be indicators of a bigger problem. if the engine is smoking when the engine is up to temperature then this can be indicative of a bent valve or a more serious problem. With the slipping transmition added in you should definately consult your local repair shop. This would seem to be a problem for a professional.

There is not much you can do about it other than actually fixing the problem and getting a new transmission and possibly a new car as well. You should not drive it like this.

Those problems probably aren't related. The transmission may need to be wearing out. The smoke is probably due to oil or coolant leak in the engine. Either way, probably an expensive repair soon.

Unless you are extremely attached to this car - which will, more than likely cost in the many thousands - I would advise you to sell this car for scrap or junk it out right.

Well the two are probably unrelated. The exhaust is probably caused by an oil or coolant leak in the engine. The slipping trans is probably a result of poor maintenance. Both should be checked out by a mechanic.

If the car is older and less valuable you should probably look for another car. The transmission and the engine may both need to be rebuilt or replaced.
