The essential items for a sewing kit can vary based on your personal preference. I think the kit should include scissors, pin cushion with pins and needles, tape measure, thread, thimble and a few buttons. You could add a few different colors of thread or just the basic black and white.

Different colors of thread, different sizes of hand sewing needles, a sharp seam ripper,a measuring tape, a sharp pair of scissors, pins for pinning fabric, saftey pins,a thimble for sewing thick fabric,fabric glue, and assorted buttons
