What safety features should I look for in a baby playpen?

For playpens with mesh sides, you should make sure that the sides do not fold down or lay down into the playpen in a way that might entangle or suffocate the baby. Also, the mesh should be spaced closely enough that the child cannot get caught in it. The tops of the sides should be padded also.

well fist you have to consider that the play pen is free from any small nuts or bolts and sharp objects sticking out, a padded one will be more suitable.

Most any one that buy first hand from stores ranging from Wal-mart to babie r us should be safe for you baby. Look for the size of the whole between gates, make sure it isn't big enough for your baby to get a body part stuck if they try to get out. Other than that you shouldn't have any concerns.

You want to make sure it is an approved model (the box will say). Also, look for small openings in the mesh.
