Well other than the camera a photographer needs a sturdy tripod. They need either film or image card depending on the camera style. I would also recommend them having a padded camera case, lens cleaning kit and extra batteries. If you are shooting for more than just fun I recommend a larger flash and a light meter.

It depends on the type of photography (wedding, product, sports, personal etc.) If you're doing product photography for instance, you'd need additional spotlights and a light box.
Other equipment essential to photographers would be a tripod, extra batteries, extra memory card, a flash unit, camera case, extra lenses, and an extra camera never hurts!
