Several options for GERD are used to control both the discomfort of acid reflux and damage to the esophagus. For milder acid reflux occurring 1-2 times a month, try over the counter medications such as Pepcid AC, or Zantac; for esophageal damage control, Prilosec, Prevacid or Nexium are good choices.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can be treated using over the counter medicines such as antacids or alginic acid (Gaviscon). Prescription medication includes proton pump inhibitors.

It depends how often you have GERD. If the GERD is only once a week, tums might be fine. If it's only when foods trigger gerd, possibly an H2 blocker like zantac. If it's more often a proton pump inhibitor such as prilosec which will permanently shut down the acid pumps in the stomach.

An acid reducing medicine that relieves symptoms and also heals and damage from acid erosion is best. Nexium is a medicine that can do both. It is always best to combine this with eating better to lose weight and avoiding trigger foods. This medicine should be taken remotely from most other meds as it will slow down their absorption.
