I would suggest alternating tylenol and ibprofin to help with the pain. Take long hot baths to relax your muscles. You could use icy hot, or a heating pad to help with your back pain.

NSAIDS like Ibuprofen can be helpful with the inflamation and pain. If you have a sensitive stomach extra strength acetominophen. Heat or cold packs can be helpful. Back exercises to strengthen your back could help. Ultimately you should seek out a neurosurgeon for proper permanent treatment.

For the pain, you would want to use an anti-inflammatory. The best one is Ibuprofen. Name brands such as Motrin or Advil are the same thing. You don't want to use more than 800mg at one time. Do not use acetaminophen; this will not relieve the inflammation. Read the labels carefully; don't drink alcohol with these medicines.

A herniated disc is more of an anatomical problem with a part of your intervertebral disc[nucleus pulposus] protruding out due to a breech in the outer fibrous ring[annulus fibrosus]. Treatment involves physiotherapy, skeletal traction and if persistent surgery ie microdiscectomy. The only OTC drug helpful will be analgesics like diclofenac or tramadol.
