Traditionally, cellos are made from a combination of spruce for the top and maple for the rest of it. However, non-traditional woods such as poplar or willow can also be used instead of maple. Some companies also make aluminum or carbon fiber cellos.

Traditionally cellos are made with a spruce top and maple for the back and sides. Poplar and willow are also sometimes used for the back and sides, and laminated woods on cheap models.
