Shale is full of minerals, most commonly found in shale that is produced in the souther states, including Florida, Alabama, Texas, and New Mexico. The minerals include corundum and iron.

Feldspar, Mica, Pyrite, Quartz and organic matter are some of the minerals found in shale. Shale develops in the deepest parts of swamps, lagoons, lakes and oceans. In these areas, the water is still enough to allow the finest pieces of clay and silt to settle to the bottom and form the layers of shale.
