Question by  Robert (20)

What kind of insulation do I need on an hvac pipe?

Answer by  caftril (176)

HVAC pipes typically use three types of insulation at the same time. First an HVAC caulk is used to seal all joins. Then fiberglas wool and netting provides the thermal insulation and strength. Finally, a plastic overwrap prevents air infiltration.

The main concern when insulating an hvac pipe is creating a vapor barrier between the humid air and the pipe thus preventing sweating. The best type of tubing to use is designed for refrigeration. Some brands of insulation are Insultube, Armaflex, and Rubatex.
