It sounds like your cat is a "breed" called a tortie. This is not actually a pure breed cat in most cases, but it has become the standard classification.

It sounds like it is a Tortoise Shell which is more commonly known as a Tortie. They can also have white fur mixed it. Very pretty cats and popular!
