Oral anti parasitic medication is the prescribed to patients suffering from dysentery. Usually metronidazole is prescribed for ten days. To replace the fluid lost it is recommended to drink a lot of water or other liquids. To ensure that the infection has been cleared after treatment the stool is rechecked.

A good treatment for dysentary would include maintaining fluid intake; whether it be orally or intravenously. Antibiotics and/or antimicrobials can be administered, depending on culture results.

The standard treatment for dysentery is oral rehydration. Given that most infections that cause dysentery are self-limiting, only in severe non-resolving cases are patients admitted into a clinic for IV treatment or antibiotics. The rehydration therapy itself has no significant side effects, but won't cure the infection directly.
