Usually when the thyroid gland goes haywire the body's hormones follow. Breast milk production is part of that system; a thyroid can cause high or low amounts of breast milk.

The thyroid produces and regulates hormones. When you are lactating, this is done through the regulation of post pregnancy hormones. So, in order to produce the milk, you need a good hormone regulatory ystem in place through the thyroid. If you are having thyroid issues there are several medications available through prescription to help the regulation.

A hypothyroid condition can negatively affect breast milk production. Lack of thyroid hormone often decreases milk production. Breastfeeding while hyperthyroid is not contraindicated and is not harmful for the baby.

Having hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, may decrease milk production. Having a hyperactive thyroid would affect breast milk production less, but the medication to treat it may affect the baby.
